What is an X42 large diameter welded pipe

X42 large-diameter steel pipe belongs to the PSL2 grade pipeline steel in the API 5L standard. In its naming, "X" represents pipeline steel, and "42" indicates a minimum yield strength of 42,000 psi (approximately 290 MPa). X42 diameter square pipe undergoes normalizing treatment. This heat treatment process, which involves heating the steel pipe to 30-50°C above Ac3 and then air-cooling it, effectively refines the grain structure, giving the material both high strength and excellent toughness. Actual test data shows that the Charpy impact energy of normalized X42 large-diameter welded steel pipe can reach over 100 J (-20°C), far exceeding the 40 J standard of ordinary welded pipes, making it particularly suitable for oil and gas transportation in extremely cold regions.

 

The chemical composition of X42 large-diameter pipeline steel is meticulously designed, with carbon content strictly controlled below 0.26%, manganese content between 1.15% and 1.50%, and trace amounts of alloying elements such as niobium and vanadium added. This microalloying design significantly enhances the material's strength and toughness while maintaining excellent weldability.

 

In terms of mechanical properties, X42 large-diameter pipeline steel exhibits excellent performance, with a minimum yield strength of 290 MPa, tensile strength ranging from 415 to 655 MPa, and elongation not less than 23%. Particularly in low-temperature environments, through controlled rolling and cooling processes, X42 pipeline steel maintains good impact toughness even at -20℃, with an impact absorption energy ≥27J, ensuring the pipeline's resistance to deformation under complex geological conditions.

 

Regarding quality control, X42 large-diameter welded pipes must meet strict dimensional tolerance requirements, with an outer diameter deviation not exceeding ±0.75% and wall thickness tolerance controlled within the range of +15%/-12.5%. Simultaneously, non-destructive testing is implemented throughout the entire process, including 100% ultrasonic testing and eddy current testing. The defect detection sensitivity reaches the equivalent of a Φ1.6mm flat-bottomed hole, ensuring the internal quality of the product. Furthermore, for pipes used in special environments, additional drop-weight tear test (DWTT) or hardness test is required to meet higher performance requirements.

 

Applications:

  • In chemical equipment manufacturing, it is used to manufacture the shells and piping systems of pressure vessels such as reactors, heat exchangers, and towers. Corrosion-resistant versions (e.g., with added Cr and Mo elements) can withstand acidic media environments.
  • In urban heating projects, as high-temperature hot water and steam transmission pipelines, its excellent thermal stability and pressure-bearing capacity ensure the long-term safe operation of the heating system.
  • In the field of building structures, X42 pipeline steel is used as truss supports in large-span structures, combining structural strength and aesthetic appeal.
