ASTM A500 steel pipe is a cold-formed welded/seamless carbon steel structural pipe that follows the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials. It is mainly used in load-bearing structures such as buildings and bridges. Its core characteristics, grade classification and uses are as follows:
1. Core characteristics and grade classification
High-strength lightweight design
According to strength, it is divided into four levels: A, B, C, and D, among which Grade B is the most widely used (yield strength ≥345MPa, tensile strength 400-550MPa).
The cold bending forming process achieves high dimensional accuracy (tolerance ≤±0.5%) and significantly reduces the deadweight of the structure.
Excellent processing and durability
Compatible with arc welding, gas shielded welding and other welding processes, the node connection is reliable;
The surface can be galvanized (zinc layer ≥85μm) or sprayed to enhance outdoor corrosion resistance.
Strict quality control
Low sulfur and phosphorus content (S≤0.035%, P≤0.035%) ensures low-temperature toughness;
Seismic performance is verified through flattening, bending and other tests (about 15% higher than ordinary steel).

2. Main application areas
| Applications | Cases | Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Building Structure | Super high-rise frame, factory support column | High bearing capacity and earthquake resistance |
| Bridge Engineering | Large span main beam, transmission tower | Fatigue resistance, dimensional stability |
| Machinery Manufacturing | Engineering machinery chassis, conveying equipment bracket | Wear resistance, welding adaptability |
| Transportation facilities | Highway guardrails, tunnel reinforcement structures | Weather resistance, impact resistance |
3. Selection and Standard Key Points
Grade Selection Guide:
GR.A: Light-load structure (such as storage shelves)
GR.B: General load-bearing structure (applicable to more than 90% of scenarios)
GR.C/D: Heavy load or extreme environment (such as chemical equipment frame)
Anti-corrosion requirements: Galvanizing treatment is required in wet/industrial areas;
Compliance certification: It must comply with ASTM A500 and ASME standards to ensure project acceptance.
