Material properties and composition

What are the main chemical components of high-quality carbon structural steel pipes?
High-quality carbon structural steel pipes are mainly composed of iron and carbon, with carbon content usually between 0.05% and 0.90%, and contain small amounts of silicon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and other elements. Silicon and manganese can improve strength and hardness, while phosphorus and sulfur as impurities need to be strictly controlled to avoid brittleness. Different grades (such as 20#, 45#) are adapted to different uses by adjusting the carbon content. Low carbon steel (such as 20#) has good plasticity, while high carbon steel (such as 45#) has higher hardness.

Why is the sulfur and phosphorus content strictly controlled?
Sulfur can cause "hot brittleness" and is prone to cracking during high-temperature processing; phosphorus causes "cold brittleness" and reduces toughness under low-temperature conditions. High-quality carbon steel requires sulfur and phosphorus contents to be less than 0.035%-0.040% respectively. Impurities can be effectively reduced through refining outside the furnace or vacuum degassing process. Impurity control directly affects the weldability and durability of steel pipes.

How does carbon content affect steel pipe performance?
An increase in carbon content will increase the strength and hardness of the steel pipe, but reduce plasticity and toughness. For example, 20# steel (0.2%C) is suitable for cold processing, and 45# steel (0.45%C) is more suitable for use as mechanical parts after heat treatment. Too high carbon content (such as 65#) makes welding more difficult. It is necessary to balance the carbon content and processing requirements according to the application scenario.

What is the difference between high-quality carbon steel and ordinary carbon steel?
High-quality carbon steel has stricter control over composition, lower sulfur and phosphorus content, and more stable mechanical properties. Ordinary carbon steel (such as Q235) has low cost but large strength fluctuations. High-quality steel ensures uniform organization through precise smelting and rolling processes. It is often used in precision machinery, automotive parts and other fields with high reliability requirements.

How to identify high-quality carbon steel pipes by grade?
Domestic grades such as "20#" and "45#" represent the average carbon content in ten thousand parts (20# is 0.20%C). International standards such as ASTM A106 are marked as "Grade B". The suffix "G" in the grade indicates boiler steel (e.g. 20G). The specific composition range should be checked in conjunction with GB/T 699 or ASTM standards.
