Why Non-Destructive Examination Matters
Non-destructive examination, often abbreviated as NDE, is the group of inspection techniques used to detect internal and surface discontinuities in welded steel pipe without destroying the pipe. Because a single defect can grow into a leak or a burst under pressure, pipe manufacturers and pipeline operators rely on NDE to confirm that the material and the weld meet the requirements of the purchase specification and the applicable code.
Radiographic Testing
Radiographic testing uses X-rays or gamma rays to produce an image of the weld on film or a digital detector. It is highly effective for detecting volumetric defects such as porosity, slag inclusions and lack of fusion. The technique requires access to both sides of the weld and careful radiation safety control, which makes it slower than some other methods but very reliable for full seam verification.
Ultrasonic Testing
Ultrasonic testing sends high frequency sound pulses through the material and records the echoes from internal reflectors. It is sensitive to planar defects such as cracks and lack of side wall fusion, and it provides immediate results with portable equipment. Automated ultrasonic testing is widely used in pipe mills for the complete seam inspection of ERW, LSAW and SSAW products at full production speed.
Surface Examination Methods
Magnetic particle testing is applied to ferromagnetic steel welds to reveal surface and near surface cracks, while liquid penetrant testing is used for non-magnetic materials such as stainless steel. Eddy current testing is another electromagnetic method used for surface and sub-surface defect detection on round pipe. These methods complement volumetric examination and are specified for critical areas such as weld caps and repair zones.
Hydrostatic Testing
Every line pipe is normally subjected to a hydrostatic test in which the pipe is filled with water and pressurized to a level defined by the product standard. This test proves the overall pressure integrity of the pipe body and weld and is the final acceptance barrier before coating and dispatch. The test pressure and hold time follow the requirements of API 5L, ASTM and other applicable specifications.
Standards and Personnel Qualification
Examination procedures, acceptance levels and operator certification are governed by standards such as ISO 9712, ASNT SNT-TC-1A and the requirements of the product specification. For pipeline projects, the acceptance criteria for NDE are defined in the project specification and frequently exceed the minimum requirements of the pipe standard, especially for offshore and sour service lines.
