API 5L X42 Spiral Submerged Arc Welded (SSAW) Pipe

Overview
API 5L X42 Spiral Submerged Arc Welding (SSAW) pipe is a type of longitudinal seam-welded steel pipe manufactured by forming a hot-rolled coil (or skelp) into a spiral shape and welding the seam using the submerged arc welding (SAW) process, both internally and externally. It conforms to the API 5L specification for line pipe, with a minimum yield strength of 42,000 psi (290 MPa). SSAW pipes are widely used for oil, gas, and water transmission pipelines, as well as for piling and other structural applications, especially in large diameters.

Key Features & Manufacturing Process

Spiral Formation: The steel strip is continuously fed at an angle and cold-formed into a spiral shape, determining the pipe's diameter.

Submerged Arc Welding (SAW): The primary seam is welded using the SAW process. An electric arc is struck beneath a layer of granular flux, creating a high-quality, deep-penetration weld with excellent mechanical properties and a smooth appearance.

Dual Welding: Welding is performed simultaneously or sequentially on both the inside and outside of the pipe.

Sizing & Cutting: The continuously formed pipe is cut to specified lengths using flying cut-off machines.

Testing & Inspection: Pipes undergo rigorous testing as per API 5L, including hydrostatic testing, non-destructive testing (NDT) of welds (like ultrasonic or X-ray), and dimensional checks.

Advantages of SSAW Pipes:

Can produce pipes with larger diameters from relatively narrower steel plates/coils.

Offers flexibility in diameter adjustment using the same strip width.

The spiral weld design distributes stress circumferentially.

Cost-effective for large-diameter, thick-wall pipes.

Typical Chemical Composition (Heat Analysis)
The following table provides the standard requirements for API 5L PSL1 X42. Note that specific manufacturer's compositions may vary within these limits.

Element Maximum % (PSL1)
Carbon (C) 0.28
Manganese (Mn) 1.25
Phosphorus (P) 0.030
Sulfur (S) 0.030
Silicon (Si) 0.45 (or by agreement)

Typical Mechanical Properties
Properties are specified for the finished pipe body. Weld seam properties are tested separately.

Property Requirement (PSL1) Remarks
Yield Strength (min) 42,000 psi (290 MPa) Specified minimum yield strength (SMYS).
Tensile Strength (min) 60,000 psi (415 MPa)
Yield to Tensile Ratio (max) Not specified for PSL1 Typically limited for higher grades.
Elongation (min) As per API 5L formula (based on sample size)
Hardness Not specified for PSL1 Often tested for sour service orders.
Weld Seam Toughness Not required for PSL1 Required for PSL2 and sour service.

Common Size Range for SSAW Pipes
SSAW is particularly common for large diameter pipelines.

Parameter Typical Range
Outside Diameter (OD) 20" (508 mm) to 100"+ (2540 mm+)
Wall Thickness (WT) 6.0 mm to 25.4 mm (and higher)
Length Usually 6m, 12m, or 18m (up to 18m common)

Applications

Onshore & Offshore Transmission Lines: For oil, natural gas, and refined products.

Water Transmission: Large-diameter water supply and distribution projects.

Piling: Used as foundation piles in construction.

Slurry & Dredging Lines: For transporting abrasive materials.

Structural Columns: In bridge piers, building supports, etc.

Standards & Certification

Primary Standard: API Specification 5L (PSL1 or PSL2).

Common Supplementary Standards: ISO 3183, ANSI, ASME, ASTM (A53, A252 for piling).

Certification: Mill Test Certificates (MTC) or Pipe Manufacturing Record (PMR) as per API 5L are provided, detailing chemical and mechanical test results.
