API 5L X70 is a high-strength pipeline steel welded pipe conforming to the American Petroleum Institute (API) SPEC 5L standard. The "X70" designation indicates a minimum yield strength of 70,000 psi. Its core characteristic is the optimal balance between high strength, high toughness, good weldability, and corrosion resistance. It is primarily manufactured using straight seam submerged arc welding and spiral submerged arc welding processes. Furthermore, it is the material of choice globally, particularly for onshore and subsea high-pressure, large-diameter long-distance pipeline projects.

Quality control and inspection of API 5L X70 welded pipe 

Non-destructive testing (NDT): The "Imaging Inspection" of Welds NDT is a core means of ensuring the internal quality of welds and eliminating potential problems. For high-grade pipeline pipes like X70, multiple methods are typically used for complementary verification. 100% ultrasonic testing of welds is like performing an "ultrasound" scan on the weld, using high-frequency sound waves to detect the presence of planar defects such as porosity, slag inclusions, incomplete penetration, or cracks. It is highly sensitive to their location and quantification. Simultaneously, 100% X-ray testing of welds is like taking an "X-ray" of the weld. Based on the intensity difference of rays after penetrating an object, it can most directly display volumetric defects (such as porosity and slag inclusions) inside the weld and provide permanent image records for traceability and evaluation. Furthermore, for PSL2 grade steel pipes, whole-pipe ultrasonic testing may be performed. This not only checks the welds but also scans the entire pipe base material to eliminate inherent defects such as delamination and inclusions that may have occurred during the rolling process, ensuring the overall integrity of the pipe.
