API 5L Class B Line Pipe Testing and Inspection

Bending Test

The bending test is an essential step in the production process of API 5L line pipes. This test ensures that the produced steel pipes are of high quality and free of cracks. During this test, the pipe sample is placed in a bending testing machine. The machine applies pressure to the sample until it breaks. The pressure value required for the pipe to break is recorded and compared with industry standards. If the pipe meets or exceeds the standard, it is considered suitable for API 5L line pipe production. However, if the pipe breaks at a lower than expected pressure, cracks may exist in the weld. In this case, the pipe will be rejected and recycled.

Flattening Test

In the production of API 5L line pipe, the flattening test is a crack detection method. The steel pipe sample is placed between two pressure plates and flattened, then inspected for cracks. This test is performed on both the weld and the pipe body. During the flattening process, longitudinal and circumferential deformation are monitored. The test results are judged as pass/fail based on the number and size of observed cracks.
