API Large Diameter Spiral Welded Steel Pipe Description
API-5L welded spiral steel pipe is made from hot-rolled strip steel or steel plate, using a forming machine to roll the strip steel or steel plate into a round or special-shaped steel pipe. It is then welded using a high-frequency welding machine. API-5L (American Petroleum Institute) spiral pipes under this standard are mainly used for pipeline construction and are classified into levels 1 and 2 based on the application. API spiral pipes have excellent corrosion resistance and high strength, making them suitable for long-distance oil and gas transportation as well as urban gas transmission.

Advantages and Disadvantages of API Large-Diameter Spiral Welded Pipe
1. Under the same pressure conditions, the stress borne by the API spiral weld seam is 75% to 90% that of the straight seam, allowing it to withstand higher pressure. Compared with straight seam welded pipes of the same outer diameter, the wall thickness can be reduced by 10% to 25% under the same pressure conditions.
2. The dimensions are precise, with the diameter tolerance generally not exceeding 0.12%, deflection less than 1/2000, and ovality less than 1%. This often eliminates the need for sizing and straightening processes.
3. Continuous production is possible, theoretically producing infinitely long steel pipes, with minimal losses from cutting the ends. This can improve metal utilization by 6% to 8%.
4. Compared to straight seam welded pipes, it offers operational flexibility and ease of changing and adjusting varieties.
5. The equipment is lightweight and requires a low initial investment. It can be made into a trailer-mounted mobile unit, producing welded pipes directly at the pipeline construction site.
6. It is easy to achieve mechanization and automation.
Disadvantages of API Large-Diameter Spiral Welded Pipe:
Due to the use of coiled strip steel as raw material, there is a certain amount of crescent bending, and the welding point is located at the elastic strip steel edge area, making it difficult to align the welding torch, thus affecting the welding quality. Therefore, complex weld seam tracking and quality inspection equipment must be set up.
