How to Prevent Cracks in Spiral Welded Pipes

1. Tempering Immediately After Quenching: Many spiral steel pipe cracks do not occur during quenching and cooling but manifest after being removed from the quenching medium, after a period of time, known as aging cracks. These are caused by significant quenching stress, which can be effectively prevented by immediate tempering after quenching.

2. Self-Tempering Using Residual Heat: For steels sensitive to cracking, utilizing the residual heat from quenching for self-tempering can effectively prevent quenching cracks in spiral steel pipes.

3. Using Lower Quenching Temperature and Shorter Soaking Time: For high-alloy steels, considering the poor thermal conductivity due to multiple alloy elements, adequate preheating (one or multiple times) is necessary.

4. Precooling Critical Areas: For areas prone to quench cracking (e.g., threaded holes, edges, grooves), asbestos rope or iron sheets should be used for wrapping, and appropriate pre-cooling should be done during quenching to prevent cracking due to rapid cooling in weak spots.

5. Selecting Slow-Cooling Media: When using oil cooling for spiral steel pipes, avoid cooling in water. Control the time spent in the cooling medium, generally cooling until near the spiral steel pipe temperature before air cooling. To prevent cooling cracks during single-liquid quenching, a high-concentration or nitrate salt solution can be used as the cooling medium, which can prevent quenching cracks in complex-shaped workpieces.
