Forming Principle

The forming process of spiral welded steel pipe involves rolling a steel strip into a pipe blank at a specific spiral angle (usually 18-30 degrees). Under the action of the forming machine, the steel strip rotates and moves forward, gradually forming a tubular structure. The choice of this spiral angle has a certain impact on the quality and performance of the steel pipe. A suitable angle allows for a more uniform stress distribution when the steel pipe is subjected to internal and external pressure, thereby improving the overall strength and stability of the steel pipe.

Welding Process

  • Welding Method: The main method used is double-sided submerged arc welding. During welding, internal and external welding are performed simultaneously. Internal welding is performed inside the steel pipe, mainly used to connect the inner edge of the steel strip; external welding is performed on the outside of the steel pipe, used to connect the outer edge of the steel strip. This double-sided welding method ensures weld quality and makes the weld more robust.
  • Welding Parameter Control: During the welding process, parameters such as welding current, voltage, welding speed, welding wire diameter, and welding wire extension length need to be strictly controlled. Welding current is generally between 600-1000A, voltage between 30-40V, and welding speed is maintained at approximately 0.3-0.8m/min. Welding wire is typically selected to match the base metal, such as H08A or H10Mn2, with a wire diameter of 3-5mm and a wire extension length of 20-30mm. Proper control of these parameters is crucial for ensuring weld quality. For example, excessive welding current may lead to overheating of the weld, resulting in defects such as porosity and slag inclusions; excessively slow welding speed may result in excessive weld height and reinforcement, affecting the quality of the steel pipe.
  • Weld quality inspection: To ensure weld quality, non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic testing and X-ray testing are used to detect internal defects in the weld (such as porosity, slag inclusions, incomplete penetration, and cracks). At the same time, the appearance of the weld will also be inspected, requiring the weld surface to be flat and smooth, without defects such as undercut or incomplete welding. Under national standards, the weld quality generally needs to reach level two or above to ensure the safety and reliability of the steel pipe during use.

 

Applications of API 5L X46 Large-Diameter Spiral Welded Pipe

1. Long-Distance Fluid Transportation: This is its most traditional application area. In water conservancy projects, it can be used for large-scale water transmission lines, river management, reservoir drainage, etc., to transport water sources. In the oil and gas industry, although straight seam welded pipes are preferred for long-distance transmission lines, spiral welded pipes are still used in some gathering and transmission pipelines, low-pressure transmission pipelines, and as pipe piles and structural pipes.

2. Municipal Pipeline Construction: In urban infrastructure construction, API 5L X46 large-diameter spiral welded pipes can be used in large-scale main pipeline drainage systems for rainwater and sewage. Its larger diameter can effectively improve drainage capacity and address urban flooding problems. It is sometimes also used as the outer shell or sleeve of the main pipeline of heating networks.

3. Industrial Projects: In large industrial enterprises such as thermal power plants, chemical plants, and steel plants, it is commonly used for circulating water pipelines, flues, ventilation ducts, and some material conveying pipelines. Its structural strength can withstand certain external loads and internal pressures.

4. Structural Support Applications: Due to its large diameter and rigidity, API 5L X46 large-diameter spiral welded pipes are also frequently used as structural components such as bridge piers, temporary or specialized support columns in building construction, and pile foundation pipes for offshore platforms. In these cases, the inside of the pipe may be filled with concrete to enhance its load-bearing capacity.
