DIN 30670 Polyethylene Coating Steel Pipe Description
DIN 30670 specifies the requirements for factory-applied three-layer extruded polyethylene coatings and one or more layers of fused polyethylene coatings that provide anti-corrosion protection for steel pipes and fittings. These coatings are suitable for protecting buried or submerged steel pipes designed to operate at temperatures ranging from -40°C to +80°C.
DIN 30670 Polyethylene Coating Steel Pipes are pipeline constructions made of straight seam welded pipes, spiral welded pipes, or seamless pipes for transporting liquids or gases. The PE coating provides sufficient protection against mechanical, thermal, and chemical forces encountered during operation, transportation, storage, and installation.

Surface Treatment
The surface of steel pipes and fittings should be cleaned by sandblasting, achieving a grade of SA 2 1/2 according to DIN EN ISO 8501-1. During surface treatment and subsequent coating processes, the pipe surface temperature should be at least 3°C above the dew point. Surface roughness Rz should be between 40 μm and 90 μm. After cleaning, the pipe surface quality should be visually inspected. Before applying the coating, the metal surface of the steel pipe should be free of any contaminants and harmful substances such as dirt, oil, grease, and weld spatter, as these can impair coating adhesion.
Pipe Coating
Before coating, the pipe surface should be heated to the required temperature, and this temperature should be monitored. This also applies to the relevant parameters of the extrusion production line. The appearance of the intermediate layer should be regularly inspected. After cooling, the appearance and continuity of the coating system should be visually assessed along the entire length of the pipe. The coating should be uniformly colored, smooth in appearance, free from pinholes, and devoid of other defects that could negatively affect the coating quality.
