1. Material Standards and Definitions
ASTM A283 Gr.A is an American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard for low- and medium-strength carbon steel plate for general structural use. Among them:
A (Grade A) is the lowest strength grade in the standard and emphasizes good formability and weldability.
Welded pipe indicates the processing of plate into pipe by a welding process (e.g., high-frequency welding, submerged arc welding).
2. Chemical composition

Low carbon design: Low carbon content (less than or equal to 0.14%) ensures that the material is easy to weld and cold work.

Low strength properties: suitable for non-pressure-bearing or low-pressure structural parts (e.g., guardrail, bracket).
High ductility: elongation ≥ 27%, suitable for bending, stamping, and other forming processes.
4. Application Scenarios and Limitations
Typical use
Ordinary structural pipes: building frames, conveyor supports, storage racks, and other non-load-bearing scenarios.
Low-pressure containers: storage tanks, ventilation ducts, and other occasions that do not require high strength.
Limitations of use
Not suitable for high pressure/high temperature: low strength, cannot meet high pressure piping standards such as ASME B31.3.
Poor corrosion resistance: no alloying elements are added, and they need to be coated or plated for protection (e.g., galvanized).
