What is the difference between ASTM A53 and ASTM A252?

The main difference between ASTM A53 and ASTM A252 is their application areas.
1. What areas is A53 applied to?
ASTM A53 specification is applicable to mechanical and pressure applications. It can also be used for general purposes in steam, water, gas and air pipes. It is suitable for welding and forming operations involving coiling, bending and flanging.

ASTM A252 specification is applicable to cylindrical pipe piles. In this case, the steel cylinder can be used as a permanent load-bearing member or as a shell to form a cast-in-place concrete pile.

 

2. What is the A53 manufacturing process?
Both ASTM A53 and ASTM A252 allow for seamless and welded manufacturing processes, but the welding processes allowed are different.

The ASTM A53 standard allows three different processes: seamless (S type), electric resistance welding (ERW) (E type) and furnace butt welding (F type).

 

3. What is the manufacturing process of A252?
ASTM A252 should be seamlessly welded, electric resistance welded, flash welded or fusion welded. The joints of welded pipe piles should be straight seams, spiral butt seams or spiral lap seams. Common manufacturing processes for ASTM A252 include seamless, ERW, LSAW and HSAW (SSAW).

Overall, ASTM A252 has greater flexibility and more manufacturing process options.

 

4. What are the differences between ASTM A53 and ASTM A252 in terms of size requirements?

The sizes of ASTM A53 pipes generally range from DN6 to DN650, and the wall thickness of small and medium-sized pipes is the nominal wall thickness;
The ASTM A252 standard does not have clear requirements for size, and the commonly used sizes are DN150 to DN3000, covering different sizes from small to large, which can meet the needs of various projects;
 

 

5. What are the unique characteristics and advantages of ASTM A53 and ASTM A252?

ASTM A53 is an ideal choice for fluid transportation and general pressure applications, with reliable sealing and mechanical properties suitable for conventional environments.

ASTM A252 on the other hand is designed for heavy-duty applications such as steel pipe piles and deep foundation works that require higher tensile and yield strengths.

Due to the different purposes of the two standards, they are not interchangeable and should be selected based on the specific requirements of the project.
