Forged ball valves are high-performance valves manufactured using a forging process. Their core strength lies in structural strength and sealing reliability.
Features and Advantages of Forged Steel Ball Valves
High Strength and Pressure Resistance: Forged steel has high tensile strength (e.g., A105 forged steel has a tensile strength of ≥485 MPa), making it suitable for high-pressure systems with nominal pressures of PN16 to PN420 (Class 150 to Class 2500), such as long-distance natural gas pipelines and oil refining plants.
Bidirectional Sealing Performance: The sealing surface between the valve seat and the ball is highly precise, enabling bidirectional sealing (both forward and reverse), meeting the sealing test requirements of standards such as API 598. This makes it particularly suitable for pipelines with bidirectional flow.
Wear and Corrosion Resistance:
The ball surface can be overlaid with a hard coating such as Stellite or a Ni-based alloy, providing erosion resistance and suitable for use with media containing particles (such as sand-laden crude oil). Made of forged steel materials such as 316L and duplex steel (e.g., 2205), these valves are resistant to corrosive media like acids, alkalis, and salts, making them suitable for applications such as chemical processing and desalination.
Long life and low maintenance:
The ball and seat experience minimal wear, and the valve can operate over 100,000 times (according to API 6D).
The simple structure, lacking complex wearing parts, allows for long maintenance cycles, making it suitable for critical pipelines operating for extended periods (e.g., gas mains).
Fast opening and closing speeds: A 90° rotation allows for easy opening and closing, making operation convenient. It can be combined with pneumatic, electric, or hydraulic actuators for automated control and rapid response.
Operating Parameters
Temperature Range:
Conventional: -29°C to 425°C (e.g., A105 forged steel);
Low-Temperature: -196°C (LNG operating conditions, using 304L forged steel with cryogenic treatment);
High-Temperature: ≤650°C (requires heat-resistant forged steels such as F91 and F92).
Media Types:
Clean Media: Water, steam, natural gas, oil products (gasoline, diesel);
Media Containing Particles: Crude oil, slurry, sand-laden natural gas;
Corrosive Media: Acids (e.g., sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid), alkali, seawater.
Applications:
Oil and Gas Industry:
Long-Distance Pipelines: Serving as mainline shutoff valves (e.g., the West-East Gas Pipeline), withstanding high pressures exceeding 10 MPa to prevent natural gas leaks;
Wellheads: Control fluid production in oil and gas wells, withstanding high pressures and sulfur resistance (for H₂S-containing media, compliance with NACE MR0175 is required).
Chemical and Petrochemical Industry:
Reactor Inlet and Outlet: Control the flow of corrosive raw materials (such as benzene and ethylene). 316L forged steel with PTFE valve seats are used.
High-Pressure Hydrogenation Unit: Prevent hydrogen leakage in hydrogen environments above 15 MPa. Materials resistant to hydrogen embrittlement (such as F347H forged steel) are required.
Power Industry:
Thermal Power Generation: Main steam pipelines (temperature 540°C, pressure 17 MPa) require F91 forged steel ball valves for shutoff and regulation.
Nuclear Power Plant: Safety-related circuits (such as emergency cooling systems) must comply with ASME B16.34 and RCC-M standards to ensure tightness and reliability.
Marine Engineering:
Offshore Platform Oil Pipelines: Resistant to seawater corrosion (using duplex forged steel) and able to withstand wave impact and vibration.
Submarine Pipelines: Deep-sea high-pressure environments (e.g., 3000 meters water depth, 30 MPa pressure) require fully welded forged steel ball valves to prevent leakage.
