What is 16Mo3 welded pipe material

According to the EN10217-2 standard, ‌16Mo3 welded steel pipe‌ is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel welded pipe designed for medium and high temperature pressure equipment. Its core characteristics and application specifications are as follows:

1. Material definition and core characteristics

Material positioning‌

It belongs to chromium-molybdenum low alloy heat-resistant steel (non-stainless steel), named after the ‌carbon content ≈0.16%‌ and ‌molybdenum content ≈0.30%‌ (actual range 0.25%~0.35%).
The domestic similar grade is ‌12Cr1MoV‌ (slightly different performance)

‌Key Performance

I‌tems ‌Values/Requirements‌
Yield Strength(ReH) ≥260 MPa(thickness ≤16mm)
Tensile Strength(Rm) 440~590 MPa
High temperature durability Long-term service temperature ≤ 525℃, short-term service temperature up to 550℃
Impact toughness ≥31J (20℃ Charpy V-notch specimen)

2. Chemical composition and alloy design

E‌lement Content range(%) ‌Functions‌
C 0.12~0.20 Balanced strength and weldability
Mo 0.25~0.35 Improve high temperature creep resistance
Cr 0.70~1.15 Enhanced antioxidant properties (not reflected in the name)
Mn 0.40~0.90 Refining grains and improving toughness
P/S S≤0.010, P≤0.025 Strictly control impurities to prevent thermal brittle cracking

3. Manufacturing and process requirements (welded pipe form)

Welding process
Submerged arc welding (LSAW) or electric resistance welding (ERW) is used for forming.
Weld area needs normalizing + tempering treatment to eliminate stress.
Quality control
Non-destructive testing of welds is mandatory (ultrasonic/radiographic flaw detection).
Hydraulic pressure test pressure ≥ 1.5 times the design pressure.
Welding specification
Preheating requirements: 150~200℃ (anti-hydrogen cracking).
Post-weld treatment: keep warm for 30 minutes and slowly cool to below 150℃.
Recommended welding materials: matching low-alloy welding rods (such as E8018-B2).

4. Typical application scenarios

High temperature pressure equipment: boiler superheater pipes (≤525℃).
Petrochemical plant: cracking furnace tubes, hydrogenation reactor transmission pipelines.
Energy field: power plant main steam pipeline (external anti-corrosion coating required)
