What are half couplings

Half couplings are designed for small pipes smaller than 1.5 inches. Their function is to extend a branch pipe from a main pipe and simplify the welding process by increasing the coupling size. This type of coupling allows for both socket welding and threaded connections, making it ideal for connecting small branch pipes to large main pipes, thereby enhancing the connection strength. In common piping applications, half couplings are the ideal choice when the branch pipe size is less than 1.5 inches; while when the branch pipe size is larger than 1.5 inches, a reducing tee connection may be necessary.

 

Differences between Half-Couplings and Branch Units

While both half-couplings and branch units are important components of piping systems, they differ significantly in structure, function, and application scenarios.

1. Structural Differences: Half-couplings employ a semi-circular design, fitting snugly against the outer diameter of the pipe and secured with bolts or other fasteners. Branch units, on the other hand, are piping components with branch structures, typically installed on the main pipe to connect branch pipes or equipment. Branch units have a more complex structure, including main pipe interfaces, branch pipe interfaces, and flanges.

2. Functional Differences: Half-couplings primarily facilitate quick connections between pipes, emphasizing sealing performance and ease of installation and disassembly. Branch units, however, are more focused on functions such as flow diversion, merging, and equipment support, with a design prioritizing stability and load-bearing capacity.

3. Application Scenario Differences: Half-couplings are widely used in various piping systems, especially in applications requiring frequent disassembly, maintenance, or replacement of pipes. Branch units, however, are often used in large, complex piping networks, such as in the petrochemical and power industries, to meet the demands of multi-branch, high-load-bearing requirements.

 

Advantages and disadvantages of half couplings

Half couplings utilize an arc-surface lap joint structure, which is simple in structure, easy to process, and indicates low material requirements. Other pipe fittings, such as flanges and elbows, are more widely used. Half couplings have relatively "mild" applications, mostly used in low-pressure, low-temperature, and small-diameter piping systems. Compared to other pipe fittings, half couplings are easier to install, but their stress characteristics are relatively poor, making them prone to deformation and cracking under stress.
