ASTM A53 Spiral Submerged Arc Welded Steel Pipe (SSAW)

Basic Overview

ASTM A53 SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) steel pipe is a carbon steel pipe manufactured by the spiral welding process in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) A53 specification . ASTM A53 is the standard specification for black and hot-dipped galvanized steel pipe intended for mechanical and pressure applications, as well as ordinary uses in steam, water, gas, and air lines .

Chemical Composition (ASTM A53 SSAW Pipe)

ASTM A53 covers three types of pipe manufacturing: Type E (Electric Resistance Welded), Type S (Seamless), and Type F (Furnace Welded). For SSAW pipes, the welded pipe requirements apply :

Element Grade A (max %) Grade B (max %)
Carbon (C) 0.25 0.30
Manganese (Mn) 0.95 1.20
Phosphorus (P) 0.05 0.05
Sulfur (S) 0.045 0.045
Silicon (Si) 0.10 min 0.10 min
Copper (Cu) 0.40 0.40

Mechanical Properties (Minimum)

Grade Yield Strength Tensile Strength
Grade A 205 MPa (30,000 psi) 330 MPa (48,000 psi)
Grade B 240 MPa (35,000 psi) 415 MPa (60,000 psi)
Grade C Varies Higher strength available

Note: Grade B is the most common grade specified for SSAW pipes .

SSAW Manufacturing Process

Spiral submerged arc welded pipes are produced using the following process :

Step Description
1. Uncoiling Steel coil is uncoiled and leveled
2. Edge Preparation Strip edges are milled for proper welding
3. Spiral Forming Steel strip is continuously formed into a cylindrical shape at a specific helix angle
4. Submerged Arc Welding Double-sided automatic submerged arc welding (inside and outside) creates the spiral seam
5. NDT Inspection 100% ultrasonic or X-ray inspection of the weld seam
6. Hydrostatic Testing Each pipe individually tested per ASTM A53 requirements
7. Finishing End processing (plain or beveled), coating, and marking

Advantages of SSAW Manufacturing :

Large diameter capability (up to 160" OD)

Cost-effective production using narrower steel coils

Long lengths available (up to 32 m)

High weld integrity with double-sided welding

Testing & Inspection Requirements

Test Type Requirement
Chemical Analysis Per heat lot – verifies composition limits
Tensile Test Per lot – verifies yield and tensile strength
Flattening Test Required for welded pipe – checks ductility
Bend Test Required – verifies weld integrity
Hydrostatic Test Each pipe tested; ≥1.5× design pressure, ≥5-10 seconds
NDT (Ultrasonic/Eddy Current) 100% of weld seam – standard practice
Dimensional Inspection Per ASTM A53 tolerances
Visual Inspection Surface condition, weld appearance

Common Applications

Application Description
Oil and Gas Transmission Onshore pipelines for crude oil and natural gas
Water Supply Municipal and industrial water transmission
Structural Applications Piling, foundation supports, construction
Steam and Air Lines Low to medium-pressure steam and compressed air
Fire Protection Fire sprinkler systems (galvanized)
General Utility Piping Industrial process lines, cooling water systems

Grade A vs. Grade B Comparison

Property Grade A Grade B
Yield Strength (min) 205 MPa (30 ksi) 240 MPa (35 ksi)
Tensile Strength (min) 330 MPa (48 ksi) 415 MPa (60 ksi)
Carbon Content (max) 0.25% 0.30%
Characteristic Lower strength, more economical Higher strength, most common
Typical Use Light-duty, low-pressure applications General industrial, high pressure

Coating Options

ASTM A53 SSAW pipes can be supplied with various surface finishes :

Coating Type Best For
Black (bare) Standard mill finish, indoor use
Hot-dipped galvanized Corrosion protection for outdoor/water applications
Varnish / Anti-rust oil Temporary protection during transport
FBE (Fusion Bonded Epoxy) Buried pipelines
3LPE (3-layer polyethylene) Buried pipelines, harsh environments
Coal Tar Epoxy Marine environments, heavy-duty protection

Dimensional Tolerances (ASTM A53)

Parameter Tolerance
Outside Diameter (NPS 2 and larger) ±1% of specified OD
Wall Thickness Minimum wall not more than 12.5% under nominal
Weight per Foot ±10% of theoretical weight

Important Considerations

1. SSAW vs. ERW Manufacturing

SSAW (Spiral) – Preferred for large diameters (≥16") where ERW is not feasible

ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) – Standard for smaller diameters (≤24")

2. Grade B is the Standard Choice

Grade B offers 17% higher yield strength than Grade A (240 MPa vs. 205 MPa)

Grade B is the most commonly specified grade for general industrial applications

3. SSAW Size Capability

SSAW is specifically used for large diameter pipes (typically 8" to 160" OD)

Smaller diameters (under 8") are typically produced by ERW or seamless methods

4. Hydrostatic Testing

ASTM A53 requires hydrostatic testing for all pipes, including SSAW

Test pressure calculated based on wall thickness and grade

5. Third-Party Inspection

Available inspection services include SGS, BV, Lloyds

Mill Test Certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1B typically provided

Summary

ASTM A53 Spiral Submerged Arc Welded (SSAW) steel pipe is a standard product for large-diameter carbon steel piping applications. With minimum yield strength of 35,000 psi (240 MPa) for Grade B – the most common specification – these pipes offer an excellent balance of strength, weldability, and cost-effectiveness for a wide range of applications.
