JIS G3457 Longitudinally Submerged Arc Welding Pipe

info-225-225info-225-225

1. Scope and Application

Process: Primarily single or double longitudinal submerged arc welding (LSAW). Also permits other arc welding processes (but SAW is dominant).

Service: High-pressure piping for steam, water, air, oil, gas, etc.

Applications: Power plants (thermal, nuclear), chemical plants, refineries, industrial boiler systems.

Comparison: It is Japan's key standard for pressure piping LSAW, analogous to ASTM A672 or DIN 17175.

2. Steel Grades and Mechanical Properties

The standard defines grades based on minimum yield strength and the steel's chemical composition/heat treatment.

Table 1: Steel Grades and Mechanical Properties (JIS G3457)

Grade Symbol Tensile Strength (N/mm²) Yield Strength (N/mm²) Min. Elongation (%) Min. Typical Steel Type / Heat Treatment
PG295 480 - 600 295 24 Carbon Steel, As-Welded or SR*
PG325 520 - 640 325 22 Carbon Steel, As-Welded or SR
PG365 550 - 690 365 20 Carbon Steel, As-Welded or SR
PG415 590 - 740 415 20 C-Mn Steel, Normalized or SR
PG465 640 - 790 465 19 C-Mn Steel, Normalized
PG265 410 - 550 265 27 Low-Temp. C Steel, Normalized
PG295 (LT) 450 - 590 295 24 Low-Temp. C Steel, Normalized

*SR = Stress Relieved

Key Notes:

The "PG" prefix stands for "Pressure Gas" (historically for gas service, now general high pressure).

Grades like PG265 and PG295 (LT) are designed for low-temperature service with specified impact tests.

Chemical composition is tightly controlled, especially for weldability (Carbon Equivalent, CE).

3. Manufacturing Process (Typical LSAW Route for JIS G3457)

Plate Material: Steel plates conforming to JIS G3101, G3106, G3115, or equivalent.

Edge Preparation: Plate edges are machined (X or V-bevel) for welding.

Forming: Cold formed into cylindrical shape using UOE or JCO process.

Welding: Longitudinal seam welded by:

Double Submerged Arc Welding (DSAW): Most common. Uses one weld pass from the inside and one from the outside.

Single SAW with backing.

Other arc welding methods (less common).

Heat Treatment: Full-body normalization is common for grades PG415 and above, and mandatory for low-temperature grades. Stress relieving (annealing) may be applied.

Testing & Inspection: As per standard requirements (see below).

Hydrostatic Testing: Mandatory on every pipe.

4. Testing and Inspection Requirements

Table 2: Mandatory Testing for JIS G3457 LSAW Pipes

Test Type Frequency / Requirement Standard (JIS) Purpose / Criteria
Hydrostatic Test 100% of pipes JIS G3457 §6.4 Pressure ≥ specified test pressure (P). Hold time ≥ 10 sec. No leakage.
Tensile Test 1 per heat/batch JIS Z 2241 Meet min. YS, TS, Elongation in Table 1.
Flattening Test 1 per lot JIS Z 2248 No cracking up to specified distance (H). Validates weld ductility.
Bend Test (Alternative) 1 per lot JIS Z 2248 Bend 180° around specified mandrel. No cracks > specified size.
Visual & Dimensional 100% - Surface defects, straightness, diameter, wall thickness, length.
Non-Destructive Test Option/Order Spec JIS G 0581-0587 Ultrasonic (UT) or Radiographic (RT) inspection of weld seam can be specified.

Important: Unlike pipeline standards (API 5L), 100% weld seam NDT (UT/RT) is not mandatory by default in JIS G3457. It is often specified in the purchase order for critical services.

5. Dimensions, Tolerances, and Marking

Size Range:

Outside Diameter (OD): Commonly from 318.5mm (12") up to 1625mm (64") or larger.

Wall Thickness (WT): Typically from 6mm to 40mm+, depending on diameter and grade.

Length: Usually 5m to 12m, or as ordered.

Marking: Each pipe must be marked with:

Manufacturer's name or trademark

Grade symbol (e.g., PG365)

Size (OD x WT)

Heat number

"G3457" standard designation

8. Key Advantages and Applications

Why specify JIS G3457 LSAW?

High Quality: Japanese manufacturing is renowned for precision and quality control.

Proven Reliability: Long history of use in demanding Japanese power and industrial plants.

Material Consistency: Tight control on chemistry and mechanical properties.

Suitable for Severe Service: Grades available for high-pressure and low-temperature applications.

Typical Applications:

Main steam lines and feedwater lines in thermal power plants.

High-pressure process lines in chemical and petrochemical plants.

Industrial boiler tubing systems.

High-pressure gas transmission within plant boundaries (not typically long-distance cross-country pipelines).

Summary

JIS G3457 is a major and specific standard for high-quality LSAW pipes used in critical high-pressure industrial services. While it shares similarities with global pressure pipe standards, it has distinct grade designations (PG-series) and a traditional emphasis on mechanical testing (flattening) over mandatory NDT.

To procure LSAW pipe to JIS G3457, ensure:

The grade (PGXXX) matches your design pressure and temperature.

Additional requirements like 100% weld seam UT/RT and heat treatment are explicitly stated in the purchase order.

You understand it is designed for stationary plant piping, not necessarily for dynamic, buried pipeline service.

This standard represents the high standard of Japanese engineering and is a trusted specification for LSAW pipes in power and process industries across Asia and globally.
