Introduction to API 5CT L80

API 5CT L80 is a grade of steel pipe (casing and tubing) defined by the American Petroleum Institute (API) Specification 5CT. It is one of the most widely used grades in the oil and gas industry due to its balanced combination of strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance.

Key Characteristics:

Strength Level: Medium-strength, with a minimum yield strength of 80,000 psi (80 ksi).

Heat Treatment: It is always supplied in the quenched and tempered condition to achieve its specified mechanical properties and homogeneity.

H₂S Service: It is the most common grade specified for sour service environments (environments containing Hydrogen Sulphide - H₂S) because its maximum hardness is strictly controlled to resist Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC).

Types: L80 is available in different metallurgical types, with L80 Type 1 (standard Cr-Mo steel) and L80 13Cr (a martensitic stainless steel for CO₂ corrosion resistance) being the most common.
