ASTM A500 SHS Square Pipe description
A500 specification covers cold-formed welded and seamless carbon steel round, square, rectangular, or special structural tube shapes for welded, riveted, or bolted connections in bridges and buildings, as well as for general structural applications.
The tube is produced in both welded and seamless sizes with a circumference of 88 inches [2235 mm] or less and a specified wall thickness of 1,000 inches [25.4 mm] or less. Class D requires heat treatment. Note 1 - Products manufactured according to this specification may not be suitable for applications such as dynamic load elements in welded structures where low-temperature notch toughness (typically measured by Charpy impact testing) may be important. Other ASTM standards do have CVN requirements and may be more suitable for these applications.
