ASTM A335 P9 Seamless Steel Pipe
Basic Overview
A standard for seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe designed for high-temperature service. Grade P9 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel used in elevated temperature applications, particularly where resistance to oxidation and corrosion is needed.

| Common Use | High-temp process pipes | Power plant piping | Modern high-eff. power plants |
Common Applications
Refinery heater tubes and process piping
High-temperature chemical process lines
Steam piping in conventional power plants
Petrochemical cracking furnace tubes
Heat exchanger tubes for high-temperature service
Important Note on P9 vs. P91
A335 P9 is the traditional 9Cr-1Mo alloy.
A335 P91 is an enhanced version with small additions of Vanadium (V) and Niobium (Nb), giving it much higher creep strength. P91 has largely replaced P9 in many modern high-efficiency power plants due to its superior mechanical properties.
Related Standard: For forged fittings (tees, elbows, flanges) made from this material, the corresponding forging specification is ASTM A234 WP9 for wrought fittings or ASTM A336 F9 for large forgings.
