ASTM A333/A333M Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Steel Pipe for Low-Temperature Service
ASTM A333 covers seamless (SMLS) and welded carbon and alloy steel pipe intended for use in low-temperature service. Grade 6 is one of the most common grades within this specification, specifically designed for impact toughness at sub-zero temperatures.
Key Features of A333 Gr.6:
Material: Carbon Steel with fine grain practice and normalized heat treatment.
Manufacturing Process: Can be seamless (SMLS) or welded. For SMLS pipe, the manufacturing process ensures homogeneity.
Primary Use: Piping systems and components that operate at low temperatures. Typical applications include:
Cryogenic service
Refrigeration plants
Low-temperature process piping
Skid-mounted packages for oil & gas in cold environments
Key Property: Excellent impact toughness at -45°C (-50°F). This is its defining characteristic.
Basic Chemical Composition Requirements (for Grade 6, ladle analysis):
| Element | Composition (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.30 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.29 - 1.06 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.025 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.025 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.10 (min) |
| Note: | Pipe is made by fine grain practice and is normalized (or normalized and tempered). |
Basic Mechanical Properties (for Grade 6):
| Property | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength, min | 415 MPa (60,000 psi) |
| Yield Strength, min | 240 MPa (35,000 psi) |
| Elongation (in 50mm), min | See table in standard (varies with wall thickness) |
| Key Requirement: | Impact Test (Charpy V-Notch): Minimum average energy of 18 J (13 ft·lbf) for three specimens tested at -45°C (-50°F). |
Common Specifications:
Size Range: Covers a wide range of NPS (Nominal Pipe Sizes) and schedules (wall thicknesses).
Delivery Condition: Normalized heat treatment is mandatory for seamless pipe to achieve the required grain structure and low-temperature toughness.
Main Comparison with Other Standards:
A192/A210/A213: These are for high-temperature service (boilers, heaters). Their focus is on strength and stability at elevated temperatures.
A333 Gr.6: Specifically for low-temperature service. Its focus is on preventing brittle fracture through guaranteed impact toughness at sub-zero temperatures. It is not suitable for high-temperature applications.
