ASTM A252 spiral steel pipe standard analysis

ASTM A252 Spiral Steel Pipe: Standard Interpretation and Engineering Application

1. Standard Overview

ASTM A252 is a standard for welded and seamless steel pipe piles developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). The latest version is ASTM A252/A252M-22. This standard specifies the materials, dimensions, performance and inspection requirements for steel pipe piles used for structural support, and is applicable to engineering fields such as buildings, bridges, and docks.

Spiral steel pipe under this standard usually refers to steel pipe piles manufactured using the spiral seam welding process. Its structural characteristics make it advantageous in large-diameter, high-strength demand scenarios.

2. Scope of application

- Use: Mainly used for deep foundation engineering, such as bridge pile foundations, high-rise building foundations, port dock supports, etc.

- Pipe diameter and wall thickness:

- Nominal pipe diameter (NPS): usually NPS 8 to 142 (about 219mm to 3620mm), refer to ANSI B36.10 for specific dimensions.

- Wall thickness: adjusted according to design requirements, the common range is 6mm to 25mm.

- Steel grade classification:

- Gr.1: Yield strength ≥ 248 MPa (36 ksi), suitable for ordinary loads.

- Gr.2: Yield strength ≥ 345 MPa (50 ksi), suitable for medium loads.

- Gr.3: Yield strength ≥ 414 MPa (60 ksi), suitable for high loads or complex environments.

3. Performance characteristics

- High strength and corrosion resistance:

- Low carbon steel or low alloy steel (such as Q345B, API 5L X65) is used, and a continuous weld is formed by spiral welding process, with uniform overall strength.

- 3PE coating, epoxy powder spraying or cathodic protection can be used to improve corrosion resistance and extend service life.

- Convenience of construction:

- The length of spiral steel pipe piles can reach 5.8m to 30m, which reduces the workload of on-site splicing and improves construction efficiency.

- It can be quickly installed by welding or flange connection to adapt to complex geological conditions.

- Earthquake resistance and durability:

- The spiral welds are evenly distributed, and the steel pipe piles have good flexibility and impact resistance, which are suitable for earthquake-prone areas.

4. Manufacturing process and quality control

- Production process:

  • Raw material inspection: The chemical composition and mechanical properties of the steel strip must meet the requirements of ASTM A252.
  • Forming and welding: The steel strip is formed by a spiral plate rolling machine and welded by submerged arc welding (SAW) or high frequency welding (HFW). The welds must pass X-ray flaw detection.
  •  Dimension calibration: Control the outer diameter and wall thickness tolerances (such as outer diameter deviation ±0.5%, wall thickness deviation ±10%).
  • Performance test: Conduct water pressure test (pressure ≥ 1.5 times of design pressure), tensile test, bending test, etc.

- Anti-corrosion treatment:

The surface rust removal level must reach Sa2.5 (near white level), and the coating thickness is selected according to environmental requirements (such as 3PE coating thickness ≥ 2.5mm).

5. Application scenarios

- Bridge engineering: as the main pier pile foundation, supporting the weight of the bridge structure.

- High-rise building: used for soft soil foundation reinforcement to provide stable support.

- Port terminal: withstand the impact of ship docking and wave erosion, and must take into account both strength and corrosion resistance.

- Water conservancy project: dam reinforcement, hydropower station infrastructure construction, etc.
