ASTM A106/A106M Gr.B - Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High-Temperature Service

ASTM A106 Grade B is the premium specification for seamless carbon steel pipe intended for high-temperature and high-pressure service, widely used in power plants, refineries, and process industries.

Key Characteristics

Feature Description
Material Carbon Steel (Fine Grain Practice)
Grades Gr. A (lower strength), Gr. B (most common), Gr. C (highest strength)
Manufacturing Seamless (SMLS) Only - No welded types
Primary Use High-temperature/pressure fluid conveyance - steam, water, oil, gas

Grade B Requirements

Chemical Composition

Element Composition (%)
Carbon (C), max 0.30
Manganese (Mn) 0.29 - 1.06
Phosphorus (P), max 0.035
Sulfur (S), max 0.035
Silicon (Si) ≥ 0.10
Note Made by fine grain practice

Mechanical Properties

Property Requirement
Tensile Strength, min 415 MPa (60,000 psi)
Yield Strength, min 240 MPa (35,000 psi)
Elongation (in 50mm), min Varies with wall thickness

Manufacturing & Heat Treatment

Process Flow:

Steel Making → 2. Pipe Making (Seamless) → 3. Heat Treatment → 4. Testing & Inspection

Heat Treatment Options:

Hot-finished (no subsequent heat treatment)

Normalized

Normalized and Tempered

Annealed

Note: Must be heat treated if cold-drawn below critical temperature.

Temperature Limitations

Recommended Maximum Service Temperatures:

Condition Temperature Limit
General Service Up to 425°C (800°F)
With De-rating 425-540°C (800-1000°F)
Not Recommended Above 540°C (1000°F)

Why the limit? Carbon steel loses strength and is subject to graphitization and oxidation at higher temperatures.

Testing Requirements

Test Requirement
Hydrostatic Test Mandatory for all pipe
Nondestructive Electric Test Optional (but common for critical service)
Tensile Test One per heat/lot
Flattening Test Required for sizes ≤ NPS 2
Bend Test For sizes ≤ NPS 2, when requested
Hardness Test Optional

Common Applications

Primary Industries:

Power Generation

Main steam lines

Feedwater lines

Boiler tubes (when specified)

Oil & Gas Refineries

Process piping

Utility lines

Hydrocarbon service

Petrochemical Plants

High-pressure process lines

Steam distribution

Industrial Plants

High-temperature heating systems

Compressed air lines (critical service)

Critical Comparison with A53 Gr.B

Parameter ASTM A106 Gr.B ASTM A53 Gr.B
Manufacturing Seamless only Seamless & welded
Temperature Service High-temperature (up to 540°C) Limited temperature (max ~430°C)
Chemistry Control Stricter (Si min, P/S limits) Less strict
Grain Structure Fine grain practice required Not specified
Cost Higher Lower
Primary Use Critical high-temp/pressure General purpose/low-pressure

Important Design Considerations

1. Corrosion Allowance

Typically 3.0 mm (1/8") added to calculated wall thickness

More aggressive environments may require higher allowances

2. Pressure Rating

Use Barlow's formula with applicable design code allowances (ASME B31.1/B31.3):

text

t = (P × D) / (2 × S × E + P × Y)

Where S = allowable stress from ASME Section II, Part D

3. Welding Requirements

Preheat often required for thicker walls (>19 mm)

Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) for certain thicknesses

Use matching filler (E7018 for SMAW)

Ordering Specifications

Complete ordering description should include:

Standard: ASTM A106/A106M

Grade: B

Size: NPS and Schedule (e.g., NPS 8, Schedule 40)

Length: SRL (Single Random Length ~6m) or DRL (Double Random Length ~12m)

Heat Treatment: Specify if other than standard

Ends: Plain end, beveled end (for welding), or threaded & coupled

Supplementary Requirements: e.g., S1 - Normalizing, S2 - Tensile Tests, etc.

Quality & Certification

Mandatory Documentation:

Mill Test Certificate (MTC) with heat number traceability

Chemical analysis for each heat

Mechanical test results

Hydrostatic test pressure record

Optional Certifications:

ASME SA106 - For Section I and VIII construction

PED/CE Marking - For European markets

NORSOK - For offshore applications

Limitations & Warnings

⚠️ Critical Restrictions:

NOT for low-temperature service (use A333 Gr.6 for <-45°C)

NOT for corrosive services without proper corrosion allowance/protection

NOT for cyclic/temperature fluctuation service without fatigue analysis

Graphitization risk above 425°C with long-term exposure

Oxidation/scaling becomes significant above 540°C

Industry Standards Reference

Application Governing Code
Power Plants ASME B31.1 - Power Piping
Refineries ASME B31.3 - Process Piping
Boiler External Piping ASME Section I
Pressure Vessels ASME Section VIII

Bottom Line: ASTM A106 Gr.B is the go-to seamless carbon steel pipe for reliable, safe operation in demanding high-temperature industrial services where pressure integrity is critical. Always specify A106 (not A53) for steam service above 200°C or high-pressure hydrocarbon service.
