Application fields of alloy steel pipes

Why does the oil industry rely on alloy steel pipes?
Oil well drilling requires the use of 13Cr martensitic stainless steel pipes to resist H₂S and CO₂ corrosion, and acidic environments require CRA (corrosion resistant alloy) lined pipes. Deep-sea production pipes must withstand 300MPa water pressure and use duplex steel or nickel-based alloys. In addition, shale gas development has driven the demand for high-strength and anti-collapse alloy casings. Such steel pipes account for 15%-20% of the total cost of oil fields, but can reduce the risk of blowouts.

What are the key standards for alloy steel pipes for nuclear power?
The main steam pipe of the nuclear island must meet ASME B&PV Code Case N-47, requiring the irradiation embrittlement rate to be less than 10% within a 60-year lifespan. The cobalt content of the material must be controlled to less than 0.02% to reduce activation radiation. For example, the AP1000 unit uses SA-738 Gr.B steel plate rolled welded pipes, and the entire process must be completed in a clean workshop. Samples of each batch of steel pipes must be kept and archived until the power plant is decommissioned.

Which alloy steel pipe is used in automobile exhaust system?
409L ferritic stainless steel (resistant to 900℃ high temperature) is used in turbocharger section, and 436L (resistant to condensing acid corrosion) is used in muffler section. Euro VI standard requires that the wall thickness of steel pipe be reduced by 20% to reduce weight, but the molybdenum content needs to be increased to 2.5%. Laser welding technology can achieve the production of 0.6mm ultra-thin wall pipes, which is 15% lighter than traditional welded pipes.

Extreme requirements for alloy steel pipes in aerospace?
The tensile strength of 300M steel (containing silicon vanadium modification) for landing gear must reach more than 1930MPa, and ultrasonic flaw detection does not allow any defects greater than 0.8mm. Aviation hydraulic pipes use 15-5PH precipitation hardened stainless steel, which needs to maintain sealing at -70℃ to 300℃. Each batch of materials needs to be traced back to the smelting furnace number, and the scrap rate is as high as 30%.

How to balance cost and performance in material selection for chemical equipment?
Atmospheric pressure tanks can use 304 stainless steel, but chlorine-containing media require Hastelloy C-276. Wet-process phosphoric acid equipment uses 825 alloy (Ni-Fe-Cr-Mo) lined pipes, which cost 8 times that of 316L but extend their service life by 20 years. The corrosion allowance must be calculated during design to avoid waste caused by excessive material selection.
