About PSL1 in API 5L Specification

Question 1: What is PSL1?
PSL1, Product Specification Level 1, is the basic requirement level in the product specification level defined by API 5L standard. It has relatively loose requirements for chemical composition, mechanical properties and testing, and is mainly used in general working conditions.

Question 2: What are the mechanical property requirements of PSL1 for API 5L Gr.B steel?
For API 5L Gr.B steel, PSL1 requires the yield strength (Minimum Yield Strength) ≥245MPa (35,500psi), the tensile strength (Minimum Tensile Strength) ≥415MPa (60,200psi), and the elongation (Minimum Elongation) The specific requirements depend on the specimen gauge length and pipe wall thickness, usually ≥23% on a 0.5 inch or 50mm gauge length.

Question 3: What are the differences in chemical composition requirements between PSL1 and PSL2?
PSL1 has relatively loose requirements on chemical composition, while PSL2 has stricter control on chemical composition, especially restrictions on carbon equivalent (CEIIW or CEPcm) to ensure good weldability and avoid welding cold cracks.

Question 4: What are the manufacturing processes for API 5L Gr.B steel pipes of PSL1 level?

API 5L Gr.B steel pipes of PSL1 level can be seamless steel pipes (SMLS), which are made by perforation, rolling or extrusion processes; or welded steel pipes (WELDED), which are made by curling and welding steel plates or steel strips. Common welding methods include high-frequency resistance welding (HFW/ERW), submerged arc welding (SAW, which is divided into straight seam submerged arc welding LSAW and spiral submerged arc welding HSAW/SSAW), and laser welding and other welding methods are rarely used for B level.

Question 5: What occasions are API 5L steel pipes of PSL1 level suitable for?
API 5L steel pipe of PSL1 grade is suitable for standard applications and environments. It is usually used for less severe operating conditions and is suitable for general working conditions. It is mainly used for general environmental and pressure conditions and is the choice for cost-sensitive projects.
