Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) Tube

Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) pipe is made from coils of steel with the weld parallel to the pipe. The width of the coil is the same as the circumference of the pipe, so the diameter is limited to 24 inches. However, because the manufacturing process is fast, it is well suited for mass production of small diameter (<= 24") pipe sections.

Deep foundations are needed when shallow soils are not strong enough to support the loads of a structure. Pipe piles are often used in deep foundations, transferring the load from the building to a stronger soil layer deep below the ground. The loads are resisted by skin friction and point support. Pipe piles can be driven into open or closed ends, with points or plates. If driven with plates, the pipe piles can be filled with concrete to increase the strength of the pile. Often, the money spent on plates, rebar, and concrete is better spent on larger, thicker piles. Pipe piles range in diameter from a few inches to several feet and can be easily spliced into piles hundreds of feet long.
Combination Walls

Large diameter pipes have high bending strength and are often used in combination sheet pile walls. The combination of large diameter pipe piles and steel sheet piles, often called combination walls, pipe-Z walls, or king pile walls, is a very effective system. As with other combination walls, the main piles carry most of the load, while the sheet piles transfer the load to the pipe and soil.
Structural Sections

The symmetry of pipes gives them the same bending strength in any direction, which makes them an excellent product for resisting buckling. The stress required to buckle an axial member decreases with increasing length. The radius of gyration has the opposite effect and increases the section's ability to resist buckling. The W and HP sections have different radii of gyration in the X and Y axes (rx and ry), while the radius of gyration for the pipe remains constant. The net result is that the pipe can withstand higher loads over longer unsupported lengths.
