API 5L B grade materials are widely used in the piping industry for construction or liquid/gas transportation. API 5L B grade high-strength steel pipes are available in two product grades, PSL1 and PSL2, each with its unique applications. The chemical composition of API 5L B grade PSL2 high-strength steel pipe gives it unique mechanical properties. The presence of chromium in API 5L B grade NACE steel pipe helps improve its wear resistance, meaning API 5L B grade PSL1 LSAW steel pipe is very durable. Similarly, the molybdenum content in API 5L B grade PSL2 DSAW steel pipe gives it excellent resistance to high-temperature creep.

The chemical composition of API 5L welded pipe has strict limits on elements such as carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur to ensure excellent weldability and corrosion resistance.

Surface Treatment
The main purpose of surface treatment is to remove contaminants, increase surface roughness to enhance coating adhesion, and provide short-term corrosion protection, ensuring the steel pipe remains intact during transportation, storage, and service.

1. External Surface Treatment:

Routine Cleaning: First, the outer surface of the steel pipe is cleaned to remove rolling grease, dirt, welding slag, and any other impurities that may affect subsequent treatments.

Shot Blasting/Shot Peening: This is the most crucial and common treatment method. The steel pipe is passed through a shot blasting machine and impacted by high-speed jets of steel shot or steel grit.

Purpose: To thoroughly remove rust, scale, and any loose attachments from the surface.

To create a uniform, anchor-pattern roughness on the steel pipe surface, which greatly improves the adhesion of subsequent anti-corrosion coatings (such as 3PE, FBE).

Standard: Typically requires a cleanliness level of Sa 2.5. This is an internationally accepted standard, meaning "very thorough blasting." The surface should be free of visible grease, dirt, scale, rust, and other foreign matter. Any residual traces should only be slight discoloration, such as dots or streaks.

2. Internal Surface Treatment: Internal surface treatment varies depending on the application and customer requirements.

No special requirements: Simple cleaning or blowing may be sufficient to remove internal welding slag and dust.

With coating requirements: If the inner wall requires a corrosion-resistant coating (such as liquid epoxy resin), sandblasting is also necessary to achieve the same cleanliness and roughness requirements as the outer surface.

Special transport media: For pipelines requiring high flow efficiency (such as gas pipelines), the inner wall may be further smoothed to reduce frictional resistance.

Post-treatment condition: Sandblasted steel pipes have a silver-gray metallic appearance. To prevent rusting during transportation and short-term storage, a thin layer of weldable temporary rust-preventive oil or agent is usually applied. This thin protective film does not affect subsequent on-site welding and permanent corrosion-resistant coating.
