A513 Rectangular Structural Tubing Description

ASTM A513 rectangular tube is a carbon welded steel pipe manufactured using the resistance welding process and delivered in hot-rolled form. The outer diameter ranges from 1/2 to 15 inches (19.0 to 381.0 millimetres), with a wall thickness of 0.065 to 0.650 inches (1.65 to 16.50 millimetres).

Surface Treatments for A513 Rectangular Tubes

Surface treatments for A513 rectangular tubes include sandblasting, shot blasting, pickling, painting, and hot-dip galvanising.

  • Sand blasting is the process of cleaning and roughening the surface of a substrate using the impact of high-speed sand flow. Compressed air is used as the power source to create a high-speed jet stream that propels the abrasive material (such as copper ore sand, quartz sand, emery, iron sand, and Hainan sand) onto the surface of the workpiece. This action alters the appearance or shape of the surface. The impact and cutting action of the abrasive material on the surface of the workpiece result in a certain degree of cleanliness and varying roughness, thereby improving the mechanical properties of the surface.

    This process enhances the fatigue resistance of the workpiece, increases adhesion between the workpiece and the coating, extends the durability of the coating, and facilitates the leveling and decorative effects of the paint.

  • Shot blasting is a process in which an electric motor drives the rotation of an impeller (either directly or via a V-belt), using centrifugal force to propel shots with diameters ranging from 0.2 to 3.0 mm (such as cast steel shots, cut wire shots, stainless steel shots, etc.) onto the surface of metal workpieces. This treatment imparts a certain roughness to the metal surface, enhancing its appearance or transforming the tensile welding stress into compressive stress, thereby increasing the workpiece's lifespan. By improving the surface finish, shot blasting also enhances the adhesion of subsequent paint coatings.

  • Acid washing, or pickling, is a method where the workpiece is immersed in a strong acid solution to remove oxide films and rust from the metal surface. The principle involves a chemical reaction between the acid solution and iron oxides (such as Fe3O4, Fe2O3, FeO), which forms salts that dissolve in the acid solution and are subsequently removed.

  • Hot-dip galvanising involves first acid washing the steel components to remove surface oxides. After acid washing, the components are cleaned in a bath of ammonium chloride or zinc chloride solution, or a mixed solution of both. The cleaned steel is then immersed in a bath of molten zinc at approximately 500°C. This process coats the steel with a layer of zinc, providing corrosion protection.
