ASTM A333 Class 6 Gas Compression Welded Pipe Overview

ASTM A333 Class 6 specifications cover seamless and welded carbon and alloy steel pipes for cryogenic operating environments. It also covers gas compression piping used in the manufacture of cryogenic equipment, cold storage facilities, and for transporting cryogenic liquefied gases.Pipelining systems typically use cryogenic carbon steel (LTCS) when the process fluid temperature may drop below -29 degrees Celsius during operation. In typical refineries, carbon steel is typically A106 Gr B, while cryogenic carbon steel is A333 Class 6.

Differences between ASTM A106 and A333 Grade 6 Steel

ASTM A333 is a good alternative to A106-B over a wider temperature range. According to ASME B31.3 (Table A-1), the allowable stress for A106 Grade B steel is 16 ksi at 500°F (263°C); the allowable stress for A333 Grade 6 steel is 20 ksi at 400°F (204°C) and 18.9 ksi at 500°F (263°C). It can be considered that either A106 or A333 materials are acceptable if the operating temperature of the application is above -20°F (-29°C). (Assuming the pipe specifications, configuration, etc. are the same) However, only A333 material can be used at temperatures below -20°F (-29°C) and below -50°F (-26°C).
