The ASTM A312 specification covers seamless and welded austenitic steel pipe for high-temperature and general corrosive service. Within this specification, 904L is a low-carbon version of the 304L and 316L grades, with added copper to enhance its resistance to strong reducing acids, such as sulfuric acid. This combination of elements gives 904L its exceptional corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride-containing environments where other stainless steel grades may be susceptible to stress corrosion cracking.

Seamless pipes are produced by piercing a solid billet of steel, which is then drawn and shaped into a tubular form without any welded seams. Welded pipes, on the other hand, are made by welding a strip of steel into a circular shape, creating a seam along the length of the pipe.
