ASTM A312 310S Steel Tube and ASTM A312 316L Steel Tube are both austenitic stainless steels with distinct properties and applications:

Chemical Composition:

310S has a higher chromium and nickel content compared to 316L, which contributes to its superior resistance to high-temperature oxidation and scaling. It also has a lower carbon content than standard 310 grade, making it less prone to sensitization and intergranular corrosion.

316L contains molybdenum, which enhances its corrosion resistance, particularly to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. It has a lower carbon content than 316, which improves its resistance to intergranular corrosion.

Applications:

310S is used in high-temperature applications such as furnace parts, heat treatment equipment, and components in petroleum refining and steam boilers due to its excellent oxidation resistance and heat resistance up to 1150°C in continuous service.

316L is chosen for applications requiring superior corrosion resistance, such as in chemical processing, food and pharmaceutical industries, and marine environments. It is also used in cryogenic structures and for components that may be exposed to warm marine environments.

Heat Treatment:

310S is typically annealed at temperatures between 1050 to 1150°C followed by water quenching to maximize its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

316L is also annealed, often at similar temperatures, to ensure optimal corrosion resistance and toughness, especially at low temperatures.

Weldability:

310S is weldable, but due to its high alloy content, special care is needed to avoid cracking and to maintain corrosion resistance.

316L is also weldable and is often used in applications where welding is required, such as in the construction of chemical tanks and marine structures.
