904L steel pipe, like other commonly used CrNi austenitic stainless steel pipes, possesses excellent resistance to pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion, high resistance to stress corrosion cracking, good resistance to intergranular corrosion, and good machinability and weldability. The highest heating temperature during hot forging can reach 1180 degrees Celsius, with a minimum stop forging temperature not less than 900 degrees Celsius. Hot forming of this steel pipe can be carried out at temperatures between 1000 and 1150 degrees Celsius. The heat treatment process for this steel pipe is between 1100 and 1150 degrees Celsius, followed by rapid cooling after heating. While this steel pipe can be welded using conventional welding processes, the most appropriate welding methods are manual metal arc welding and tungsten inert gas welding. When manual metal arc welding is used to weld plates less than 6 millimeters thick, the electrode diameter should not exceed 2.5 millimeters; when the plate thickness exceeds 6 millimeters, the electrode diameter should be less than 3.2 millimeters. If post-weld heat treatment is required, it can be carried out by heating to 1075-1125 degrees Celsius and then rapidly cooling. When welding with tungsten inert gas welding, the filler metal used can be the same material as the welding rod, and after welding, the weld seam must be pickled and passivated.

904L ss pipe has a very low carbon content (maximum 0.020%), so there is no carbide precipitation in general heat treatment and welding situations, eliminating the risk of intergranular corrosion that typically occurs after general heat treatment and welding. Due to its high chromium, nickel, and molybdenum content, and the addition of copper, 904L stainless steel pipes can be passivated even in reducing environments such as sulfuric acid and formic acid. The high nickel content also results in a low corrosion rate even in an active state. In pure sulfuric acid concentrations ranging from 0 to 98%, 904L steel can be used at temperatures up to 40°C. In pure phosphoric acid concentrations ranging from 0 to 85%, its corrosion resistance is excellent. In industrial phosphoric acid produced by wet process technology, impurities have a significant impact on corrosion resistance. In all varieties of phosphoric acid, 904L stainless steel pipes have better corrosion resistance than ordinary stainless steel pipes. Compared to molybdenum-free high-alloyed steels, its corrosion resistance is lower in strongly oxidizing nitric acid. In hydrochloric acid, the use of 904L stainless steel pipes is limited to lower concentrations of 1-2%. Within this concentration range, 904L stainless steel pipes have better corrosion resistance than conventional stainless steel. 904L stainless steel pipes have high resistance to pitting corrosion and excellent resistance to crevice corrosion in chloride solutions. The high nickel content of 904L stainless steel reduces the corrosion rate in pits and crevices. Austenitic stainless steels may be susceptible to stress corrosion cracking in environments rich in chlorides at temperatures above 60°C, but increasing the nickel content of the stainless steel can reduce this sensitization. Due to its high nickel content, 904L stainless steel pipes have high resistance to stress corrosion cracking in chloride solutions, concentrated hydroxide solutions, and environments rich in hydrogen sulfide.
