Ultrasonic Testing Of Steel Pipes

welded pipewelded steel tubecarbon steel

Ultrasonic inspection is a widely used technique for assessing the structural integrity of steel tubes in various industries. The use of ultrasound to assess the quality and defects of steel tubes is based on the principles of sound reflection, attenuation and propagation.
We apply an electrical pulse to a probe, which causes a piezoelectric chip in the probe to vibrate, thus generating ultrasonic waves. The ultrasonic waves propagate through the steel pipe at a certain speed. When a defect occurs, part of the sound wave is reflected back while the other part continues to propagate forward. The reflected sound waves from the defect are picked up by the probe and converted into electrical pulses by the probe's piezoelectric chip. Amplified by the instrument, these pulses are displayed on the instrument's fluorescent screen.
Ultrasonic testing detects defects such as cracks, corrosion and voids in steel pipe. These defects cause sound waves to scatter or be absorbed, and the location and severity of the defects can be determined through detection and analysis.
