What is ASTM A252 Grade 2 Grade 3 Piling Pipe?
ASTM A252 Grade 2 Grade 3 Piling pipe is an industrial spiral seam steel pipe widely used in pile foundation construction for deep-water offshore wharves, bridges, roads, and high-rise buildings in coastal, river, and lake areas. It can reach a maximum diameter of 3,620 mm, primarily made of Q235 and Q345 materials, with customization available. Its outer diameter range is 219-3,620 mm, with lengths typically between 8-12 meters. It is manufactured by flattening, edge trimming, and forming steel coil plates followed by double-sided submerged arc welding (SAW) processes. The welds undergo multiple inspection procedures including ultrasonic testing, X-ray re-examination, and hydrostatic testing.
ASTM A252 Grade 2 Grade 3 Piling Pipe Manufacturing Process
ASTM A252 Grade 2 Grade 3 Spiral steel pipe is produced by cold-forming steel coil into a spiral shape and welding it using automatic double-wire double-sided submerged arc welding (SAW).
(1) Raw materials (steel coil, welding wire, and flux) undergo strict physical and chemical testing before use.
(2) End-to-end coil welding is performed using single or double-wire SAW, with additional SAW for repair after coiling into a pipe.
(3) Pre-forming treatment: The coil undergoes leveling, edge trimming, planing, surface cleaning, and pre-bending before forming.
(4) Pressure control: An electrical pressure gauge ensures stable coil feeding by regulating hydraulic pressure on both sides of the conveyor.
(5) Forming method: External or internal roller forming is used.
(6) Weld gap control: A dedicated device ensures proper weld gap, strictly controlling pipe diameter, misalignment, and weld clearance.
(7) Welding: Both internal and external welds use Lincoln electric welders (single or double-wire SAW) for consistent welding parameters.
(8) In-line ultrasonic testing: Every weld undergoes continuous automatic ultrasonic inspection for 100% coverage. Defects trigger alarms and marking, allowing immediate process adjustments.
(9) Cutting: Pipes are cut into individual lengths using air plasma cutting.
(10) First-piece inspection: The first three pipes per batch undergo rigorous checks on weld mechanical properties, chemical composition, fusion quality, surface finish, and NDT before full production.
(11) Defect re-examination: marked weld areas with ultrasonic indications undergo manual ultrasonic and X-ray re-examination. Confirmed defects are repaired and re-inspected until cleared.
(12) X-ray inspection: All coil butt welds and T-joints intersecting spiral welds are examined via X-ray TV or film.
(13) Hydrostatic testing: Each pipe undergoes radial-seal pressure testing with parameters strictly controlled by a computer system and automatically recorded.
(14) End machining: Pipe ends are mechanically processed to ensure precise perpendicularity, bevel angle, and blunt edge dimensions.
