API 5L X65 Straight Seam Submerged Arc Welded Pipe

Product introduction

API 5L X65 is a high-strength pipeline steel welded pipe. In its designation, "X65" indicates that the minimum yield strength of this steel grade is 65,000 psi (approximately 448 MPa). Its main applications include: high-pressure oil and gas transmission trunk lines, used in onshore and subsea oil and gas pipelines; transportation of highly hazardous media, used for conveying oil and gas containing small amounts of corrosive media such as hydrogen sulfide; and pipelines traversing harsh terrain, requiring steel pipes with high toughness and good deformation capacity.

API 5L X65 quality levels include PSL 1 and PSL 2. PSL 1 is the standard requirement, with relatively lenient requirements on chemical composition and impact toughness. PSL 2 is a higher level and is currently the mainstream requirement for X65 welded pipes. It has stricter regulations on chemical composition, mechanical properties (especially impact toughness), and non-destructive testing.

A typical, advanced API 5L X65 PSL2 composition might look like this:

The API 5L standard uses the Pcm formula (also known as the IIW formula) to calculate carbon equivalent:
Pcm = C + Si/30 + Mn/20 + Cu/20 + Ni/60 + Cr/20 + Mo/15 + V/10 + 5B

Quality Assurance and Testing

To ensure pipeline safety, each X65 welded pipe undergoes rigorous inspection, including non-destructive testing (NDT), 100% ultrasonic testing (UT) of the weld seams, and/or radiographic testing (RT). Mechanical property testing involves tensile, bending, and impact tests on the pipe body and weld seams. Dimensional and visual inspections check outer diameter, wall thickness, length, ovality, weld reinforcement, and surface defects. A hydrostatic test is mandatory for every pipe, with the test pressure calculated according to a standard formula.
