API 5L X46 straight seam submerged arc welded pipe combines pressure resistance and formability, making it particularly suitable for onshore oil and gas gathering and transmission pipelines and urban gas distribution systems under medium pressure conditions. Its end treatment requires a smooth machined surface and removal of burrs. To ensure weld quality, the pipe ends should have a smooth, undamaged bevel surface, typically delivered in bevel form. The bevel angle and blunt edge dimensions must conform to relevant standards or order agreements to facilitate on-site butt welding.

Heat Treatment Process

The typical heat treatment process for API 5L X46 straight seam welded pipe is partial normalizing of the weld or normalizing of the entire pipe body. The core step is to heat the welded steel pipe to a suitable temperature above the Ac3 phase transformation point (typically 900°C ± 25°C), causing the microstructure of the weld and heat-affected zone to revert to homogeneous austenite, followed by uniform cooling in still air.

This process aims to completely eliminate residual welding stress and refine and homogenize the microstructure of the weld area, thereby restoring and improving its mechanical properties, ensuring its toughness meets PSL2 level requirements, and maintaining consistent performance throughout the pipe body. Necessary straightening and hydrostatic testing are required after treatment.
