API 5L Standard Specification For Line Pipe

Introduction

This specification aims to provide standards for pipelines transporting gases, water, and oil in the oil and gas industry.

This specification covers seamless and welded steel pipes. It includes plain-end, threaded-end, and flared-end pipes, as well as through-line pipelines (TFLs) and pipes with pre-installed special fittings at the ends.

Hot Working Treatment:

Hot working treatments (such as hot bending or hot straightening) of API 5L Gr.B steel pipes must be carried out under strict temperature control. The recommended hot working temperature range is typically 850°C to 980°C. The entire operation should involve uniform heating to avoid localized overheating. After processing, the pipe must be allowed to cool slowly to room temperature in still air to ensure the recovery and stabilization of material properties and to prevent harmful microstructure changes or increased hardness due to rapid cooling.
