ASTM A252 GR.1 GR.2 GR.3 Welded Steel Pipe Pile

ASTM A252 pipe pile is a structural, cylindrical product defined by strength grade rather than chemistry, supplied in Grade 1, 2 and 3 and produced as SSAW, LSAW, ERW or seamless. Its two non-obvious rules — no mandatory hydrostatic test and no mandatory Charpy testing — decide most specification add-ons. State OD, wall, length, grade, process and coating in the inquiry, and confirm the A252M-26 edition on the mill certificate for cross-version projects.

Product Introduction

ASTM A252 pipe pile is the welded and seamless steel pipe pile standard for deep foundations, where the steel cylinder works as a permanent load-carrying member or as a shell for cast-in-place concrete piles. The three grades - ASTM A252 Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 - are defined by yield and tensile strength, not by chemistry. The most specified grade, A252 Grade 3 pipe pile, carries a minimum yield of 45 ksi (310 MPa) and a minimum tensile of 66 ksi (455 MPa). Two facts decide most buying decisions: the standard requires no hydrostatic test and no Charpy impact test, so both must be written into the order when the project needs them.

ASTM A252 pipe pile is a cylindrical, nominal-wall structural product. The steel cylinder acts as a permanent load-carrying member or as a shell to form cast-in-place concrete piles. Each welded pile is made by electric-resistance, flash or fusion welding with longitudinal, helical-butt or helical-lap seams, and seamless piles are also permitted. GNEE Pipe supplies welded steel pipe pile in Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3, produced as SSAW, LSAW, ERW or seamless, with outside diameters from NPS 6 in to 56 in (168.3–1422 mm) and walls from 3.4 mm to 50.8 mm, and longer lengths by splicing. Send your OD × wall × grade and we will confirm the specification.

Chemical Composition

ASTM A252 chemical composition (heat analysis, max %)
Element Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3
Carbon (C) 0.26 0.26 0.26
Manganese (Mn) 1.20 1.20 1.40
Phosphorus (P) 0.035 0.035 0.035
Sulfur (S) 0.035 0.035 0.035
Copper (Cu), min* 0.20 only if copper-containing steel is specified

The three grades use the same chemistry envelope; only Grade 3 raises the manganese ceiling to 1.40 %. Product-analysis limits are slightly looser (P and S 0.045 %, Mn +0.05 %). Some supplier pages publish P 0.05 % or Mn 1.6 % - that mixes the product-analysis ceiling or simply overstates the standard. *Copper is an optional requirement, not a baseline.

Mechanical Properties

A252 pipe pile yield strength is the grade-defining property: 30 ksi (205 MPa) for Grade 1, 35 ksi (240 MPa) for Grade 2 and 45 ksi (310 MPa) for Grade 3, with tensile minimums of 50, 60 and 66 ksi.

ASTM A252 mechanical properties (minimum)
Property Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3
Yield strength, min 30 ksi (205 MPa) 35 ksi (240 MPa) 45 ksi (310 MPa)
Tensile strength, min 50 ksi (345 MPa) 60 ksi (415 MPa) 66 ksi (455 MPa)
Elongation in 2 in (50.8 mm), min 30 % 25 % 20 %
Test methods Tension: ASTM A370; chemistry: ASTM A751

Elongation values apply to nominal wall 5/16 in (7.9 mm) and above; for thinner walls the standard deducts a fixed amount per 1/32 in (0.8 mm) reduction. If no clear yield point shows, yield strength is taken at a 0.2 % permanent offset or 0.5 % total extension under load.

Grade 1 vs 2 vs 3

ASTM A252 grade selection by strength and use
Requirement Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3
Min yield 30 ksi (205 MPa) 35 ksi (240 MPa) 45 ksi (310 MPa)
Min tensile 50 ksi (345 MPa) 60 ksi (415 MPa) 66 ksi (455 MPa)
Typical use Light-duty or legacy specs General foundations, building piles Heavy foundations, marine, bridges

On most export tenders the practical question is ASTM A252 Grade 2 vs Grade 3; Grade 3 is chosen for heavier foundations, harder driving or stricter engineer requirements. The approved pile design controls the final choice. If the drawing says Grade 2, a supplier should not change it to Grade 3 just because the stronger grade sounds better - and vice versa.

Applications

A252 steel pipe pile is chosen wherever a deep foundation needs high axial capacity from a large-diameter, site-weldable cylinder. The main applications:

Bridge and viaduct foundations

River-crossing, lake-crossing and sea-crossing bridges use A252 Grade 2 or Grade 3 pipe piles for piers and abutments that must resist driving stress and dynamic load.

Port, wharf and marine terminals

Crane rails, container yards and dolphins rely on large-diameter SSAW or LSAW piles, usually with FBE, 3LPE or galvanizing for the corrosive coastal environment.

High-rise and industrial building foundations

Soft-soil sites use pipe piles as permanent load-carrying members or as shells for cast-in-place concrete piles, reducing excavation and pile-cap size.

Retaining walls and cofferdams

Pipe piles interlocked with sheet piles form water- and soil-retaining walls for excavations and waterfront works.

Offshore wind and energy foundations

Monopile and jacket foundations for offshore wind use A252 Grade 3 at diameters well beyond 56 in (1422 mm), supplied with marine coating systems and third-party inspection.

Quality Control and Testing

Heat analysis (ASTM A751). Carbon, manganese, phosphorus and sulfur reported in the mill certificate for every heat.

Tensile testing (ASTM A370). Yield and tensile taken per heat; elongation by wall-thickness band.

Weld-seam NDT. 100 % ultrasonic or radiographic examination of the seam; hydrostatic testing is not required by A252 and is only performed when specified.

Flattening test. Welded piles are checked for weld integrity under flattening where the order requires it.

Dimensional and visual inspection. OD, wall, length, straightness and surface defects verified 100 %; heat number traceability is maintained from plate or coil to finished pile.

Third-party inspection. SGS, BV, DNV or LR witness at the mill available on request; EN 10204 3.1 MTC supplied as standard.

FAQ

What is the difference between ASTM A252 Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3?

The three grades share the same chemical envelope (C 0.26 max, P 0.035 max, S 0.035 max) and differ only by minimum strength. Grade 1: yield 30 ksi (205 MPa), tensile 50 ksi (345 MPa). Grade 2: yield 35 ksi (240 MPa), tensile 60 ksi (415 MPa). Grade 3: yield 45 ksi (310 MPa), tensile 66 ksi (455 MPa). Grade 3 is the highest strength and the most specified in modern heavy civil work.

Which is stronger, ASTM A252 Grade 2 or Grade 3?

Grade 3 is stronger. Its minimum yield is 45 ksi (310 MPa) against 35 ksi (240 MPa) for Grade 2, and its minimum tensile is 66 ksi (455 MPa) against 60 ksi (415 MPa). For the same outside diameter, Grade 3 carries more axial load or lets you use a thinner wall. The engineer of record controls the final choice, and a supplier should not upgrade Grade 2 to Grade 3 on price alone.

Does ASTM A252 require hydrostatic testing?

No. ASTM A252 is a structural piling specification and does not require hydrostatic testing, unlike ASTM A53 or API 5L. Piles are driven or filled with concrete rather than used to convey pressurized fluid. If a pile is ever to hold water or gas, specify a hydrostatic test as an extra requirement in the purchase order.

Does ASTM A252 require Charpy impact testing?

No. The base ASTM A252 specification has no Charpy V-notch requirement. For cold-climate driving, bridge dynamic loads or offshore exposure, the project must add CVN testing and a minimum energy and temperature as a supplementary requirement. Do not assume impact toughness is covered by the standard grade.

What welding process is used for A252 pipe piles - SSAW, LSAW or ERW?

All three are permitted. SSAW (spiral) is the usual choice for large diameters up to about 120 in (3048 mm) and moderate walls. LSAW (longitudinal, JCOE/UOE) suits heavy walls and strict project acceptance. ERW covers smaller diameters up to about 24 in (610 mm) with good dimensional consistency. Seamless is allowed but rarely economical for foundation piles.

What dimensions should I put in an A252 pipe pile inquiry?

State outside diameter, wall thickness, length, quantity and grade, plus welding process, end finish, coating and inspection. A weak inquiry reads '36 inch pile pipe'; a complete one reads 'OD 914 mm x WT 16 mm x 18 m, ASTM A252 Grade 3, SSAW, bare, beveled ends, 2000 m'. A252 itself sets no dimensions and references ASME B36.10M, so the inquiry must pin every size.

Can ASTM A252 pipe piles be galvanized or coated?

Yes. Bare pipe with a corrosion allowance is common for driven piles, but marine and exposed structures often use hot-dip galvanizing (ASTM A123), fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE), 3LPE or 3LPP. Coating choice depends on the environment and design life; the cutback at the ends must match the welding and field-repair procedure.

What is the current edition of ASTM A252?

The current edition is ASTM A252/A252M-26, published on 2026-02-01, which supersedes ASTM A252/A252M-19. For cross-version projects, confirm in the purchase order which edition the mill certificate and inspection are issued against.
