API 5L GRB spiral welded pipe is a standard specification for steel pipes designated by the American Petroleum Institute. Generally, API 5L GRB spiral welded pipes were developed to address the technical limitations of API 5L GRB straight seam welded pipes. Due to production technology constraints, straight seam welded pipes cannot be produced in large diameters. Therefore, spiral welding is used to manufacture large-diameter API 5L welded pipes for long-distance transportation projects. Quality Standard Comparison for API 5L GRB Spiral Pipes
1. PSL2 Quality Standards are Higher than PSL1
The two specification levels, PSL1 and PSL2, differ not only in inspection requirements but also in chemical composition and mechanical property requirements. Therefore, when ordering according to API 5L, the contract must specify the product specification level, i.e., PSL1 or PSL2, in addition to the usual indicators such as size and steel grade. PSL2 has stricter requirements than PSL1 in terms of chemical composition, tensile properties, impact energy, and non-destructive testing.
2. Impact Performance Requirements
PSL1 does not require impact performance testing. For PSL2, all steel grades except X80 must have a full-size impact energy (Akv) average value at 0°C: longitudinal ≥ 41J, transverse ≥ 27J. For X80 steel grade, the full-size impact energy average value at 0°C: longitudinal ≥ 101J, transverse ≥ 68J.
3. Hydrostatic Testing and Non-Destructive Testing
Each API 5L GRB line pipe must undergo a hydrostatic test. The standard does not allow non-destructive testing to replace hydrostatic testing, which is a significant difference between API standards and Chinese standards. PSL1 does not require non-destructive testing, whereas PSL2 requires non-destructive testing for each pipe.
